Flashback to 2020, when we’d hear “No Justice, No Peace” chanted all across the country during the Black Lives Matter marches and protests. I remember hearing this chant, and thinking how we (the collective ‘we’) need peace now more than ever. During that time, I had reclaimed my creative voice, for my people. The seedlings for this publication started that Summer of 2020. My background in art therapy and lived experiences as a Black womxn deeply influenced this book. This book is for the protesters, the organizers, the abolitionists, the healers, the mothers, the fathers, my brothers and sisters—and for anyone else looking for a gentler way to learn and remember the lives of those taken all too soon. This book was made for, as Elizabeth Alexander so appropriately named us, “The Trayvon Generation”. Some of the names in this book you’ll instantly recognize, and others I invite you to learn with the honor, empathy and respect their stories truly deserve.
